Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How much does it cost to join the squadron?
A: All cadets pay a monthly subscription of £5. In return you will be issued your blue uniform (on loan) free of charge, and be provided with flying and gliding activities for free.
Q: Do I need to buy anything when I join?
A: You will be provided with all the items of uniform you need, excluding a pair of black shoes. We recommend that you consider buying a pair of RAF style shoes (approx £12), and also a set of CS95 combat clothing (a set can be purchased for around £25). If you participate in any adventure training, a pair of boots may also be required. The squadron has a supply of adventure training equipment (including tents and rucksacks), so you should only have to buy a few essentials.
Q: What will I do when I first arrive at the squadron?
A: On your first night you will be introduced to the staff and cadets, and have an introductory talk with the Commanding Officer. You will be given a tour of the building and briefed on fire safety, health & safety as well as expectations and then you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
Q: What should I wear until I get my uniform?
A: All probationers who are not yet uniformed are expected to wear school uniform.
Q: Can I go flying and gliding and to camps as soon as I join?
A: When you first join the squadron you are classed as a probationer. You will not be able to participate in some events (like flying/gliding and camps) until you have completed a Basic Training Programme that normally takes 3-4 months.
