Young Eagles take to the skies
Twelve air cadets from 1701 (Johnstone) Squadron were today given the opportunity to go flying with the Popular Flying Association (PFA), who are running an international scheme to get a million youngsters in the air by the end of 2003.
Volunteer pilots from the PFA and their aircraft flew into Cumbernauld Airport to take the cadets on a short flight over the neighbouring countryside.
Cadet Corporal Michelle Brown said: "The event was brilliant. As well as getting the chance to fly, we were also given a guided tour of the aircraft and equipment at the airport."
Two of the cadets were also fortunate to be offered flight in an Army Gazelle helicopter which landed at the airport later on that day. Cadet Scott Gralko, who only joined the squadron a few months earlier, said: "It was fantastic - the Gazelle was really fast, and sitting in the front I could see the ground rushing below my feet!"
