This morning 11 cadets travelled to Dam Park in Ayr, where Squadrons from all over the wing took part in the GWS Wing's annual athletics event. After gathering only 3 medals last year, from Cpl Thomson and Cdt Gordon, we are hoping to improve on last years performance.
Once the cadets and staff arrived at Dam park, they took there seats in the stand and waited for the event to start at 9am. As the events started Cdt’s Brownlee, Moore and Cpl Thomson were called up to the start of the 100m sprint. Cdt Brownlee was in the first race and managed to win his heat, but unfortunately he did not manage win in the final. Where as Cdt Moore and Cpl Thomson were both in the same heat and Cdt Moore managed to win the heat but never won the final, while Cpl Thomson trailed behind Cdt Moore in the heat.
During the Athletics event; Cdt Fletcher competed in the Javelin event and 100m sprint where she came in 2nd, but was disqualified because she had changed lanes, Cdt Lamont competed in two event’s, which were the High Jump and Shot-Putt, Cdt Peddie competed in the Long Jump and 200m sprint, Cdt Gordon competed in the Shot-Putt event, Cdt Smith took part in the Shot-Putt and 100m sprint events, Cdt Halbert took part in the Javelin event and the Long Jump event, Cdt Stevenson took part in the Discus event, Cpl Thomson also took part in the 400m race and last but not least. CWO Gralko managed to get an impressive 12.5 metres in the Javelin event and an overwhelming score of 5.6 metres in the Shot Put; smashing both his records from previous years. This being his final year at the Wing Athletics he went out on a high. This was not our year, after the 9 cadets above failed to land in any of finishing spots.
But there was hope. Cdt Brownlee managed to win first spot in the 1500m race. After a lack of communication between a cadet and the members of staff who thought that the race was over, had sprinted towards the finish line, but there was one final lap to go and Brownlee managed to come first. While Cdt Moore managed to pull through a leg injury and reach a height of 160cm in the High Jump to win a bronze medal.
Overall, the day was successful with only Sgt Love, Cpl Thomson and Cdt Moore carrying leg injuries and the squadron gaining only two medals. As we look forward to next year’s event, hopefully we can improve and have every cadet winning a medal.
